What you can use the SFR WiFi Service for

Which services are accessible via the SFR WiFi Service?

The SFR WiFi Service provides global wireless access to the Internet with all the advantages of a conventional broadband connection*. So once I have connected I can surf normally and, for instance:
  • check my e-mails on a Web site or my e-mail application (e.g. Outlook),
  • access my company data and applications (if permitted by my company network),
  • browse through my favourite Web sites (news, music, film, etc),
  • chat with my friends in chat rooms and forums,
  • view videos accessible on the Internet,

Can I receive my e-mails on my e-mail application (e.g. Outlook, Exchange, etc)?

Yes, the SFR WiFi Service can be used to receive e-mails with my e-mail application*:
  • I just have to identify myself with my SFR WiFi user name and password.
  • Then I open my e-mail application.
  • My e-mails are downloaded and I can then check them as usual.
Note:

If you have a VPN**, you shoud activate it first: see how to activate my VPN.
If you have any problems receiving your e-mails, please contact your company's office applications department or your e-mail provider.

Can I send my e-mails from my e-mail application (e.g. Outlook, Exchange, etc)?

This depends on my e-mail provider. Usually the answer is yes, if it allows e-mails to be sent from networks that do not belong to it:
  • I just have to identify myself with my SFR WiFi login and password
  • Then I open my e-mail application.
  • I write my message and send it as usual.
Note:
If you have a VPN**, you have to activate it first: see how to activate my VPN.
If you have any problems receiving your e-mails, please contact your company's office applications department or your e-mail provider.

Can I access my Internet e-mail (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo, etc)?

Yes, I can use the SFR WiFi Service to access all Internet sites, including the sites of webmail providers. I just have to identify myself with my SFR WiFi login and password.

Then I enter the Internet address (url) of my e-mail service in my Internet browser to check my e-mails.

If you have any problems receiving or sending your Internet e-mails, please contact your company's office applications department or your Internet e-mail provider.

Can I access my company network?

Yes*, once I have identified myself by entering my SFR WiFi login and password, I can access my company network by activating my VPN software**. This is normally accessible from the network management file (in Windows: Start > Settings > Networks). Once my VPN** is established, I am connected in the same way as in my office.
If you have any problems activating your VPN**, please contact your company's office applications department.

What level of security does the SFR WiFi Service network offer?

SFR has established three main principles in order to guarantee the confidentiality of data transferred on the SFR WiFi Service network and stored on my computer connected in a hotspot:
  • A local network cannot be created in SFR hotspots, so it is impossible to transfer data directly from one computer to another without going via the Internet.
  • All WiFi accounts are personal: the WiFi account for a prepayment card, a session purchased on line or a subscription can be used on only one laptop or PDA, thereby protecting me in the event of theft or fraudulent use of my password.
  • These on-line session purchase services using a credit card and charged on bills are made secure by SSL encryption and identification of the customer by his/her personal code.
In addition, SFR encourages its customers to use VPNs** and firewalls for their WiFi connections in the same way as their wired connections via the Internet. SFR has therefore initiated a programme of tests on the main VPNs** on its network to validate their compatibility.

It also asks its WiFi operating partners to follow the same security rules.

* If supported by your company's network.
** Certain VPNs may not operate on WiFi type networks.
